Adapt & Extend is an optional Unit resource for Teachers. The document provides ideas and prompts that Teachers can use to modify the Unit to fit the specific needs of their students. Adapt & Extend provides increased flexibility and choice during instruction. Designed for a specific unit, it allows teachers to modify and adapt instruction based on the needs of their individual classroom and students. Teachers can be confident that they are reinforcing the critical skills and ideas that students should be focusing on at that point of instruction within the Unit.
The content varies by Unit, but will always include three components:
■ READ MORE contains suggested independent reading titles and thematically aligned novel studies from our ever-growing library.
■ EXPAND AND EXPLORE contains ideas and activities that can be woven in or added on to the existing unit structure either to challenge individual students or to supplement an entire class’s course of study. These activities can be used to complement instruction and offer student choice for units that have fewer than 30 days of instruction.
■ FOCUS ON FIT includes ideas that alter or permeate the entire unit. For example, for every analytical unit, a “creative course” adaptation is offered for teachers who would like to engage with the unit through a creative lens rather than an analytical lens. Adapt & Extend provides ideas and prompts but not full lesson plans. We hope you will take these ideas and weave them into your instruction in the ways that work best for you.
