Scaffolding within Levels of Support

Lenses on Literature provides a comprehensive scaffolding model comprising four assignable levels to ensure all students can meaningfully engage with the same complex texts and successfully complete grade-level tasks during Tier 1 instruction. The Levels of Support (LoS) framework is grounded in research-based practices that are especially responsive to the needs of multilingual learners while remaining effective for a wide range of students.

Supports available within the Levels of Support framework include:

Using Levels of Support Across Units

At the start of each unit, assign students a Level of Support to ensure they receive the

scaffolds they need to fully engage in discussions, text analysis, and writing tasks. This

process supports growth over time:

Assign Level of Support: Use assessment data and classroom observation to provide the lightest support each student needs to succeed with grade-level texts and tasks.

Monitor Progress: Gather informal data from discussions, daily tasks, and written

responses to track how students are doing with their current support level.

Adjust for the Next Unit: Use what you’ve learned to maintain, increase, or reduce

Levels of Support so each student stays challenged and supported as they grow.
