As students work through MATHia, you may find a need to scaffold support for students. Consider the options outlined below.
Lead the class through the step-by-step example for the workspace aligned with their current learning. Consider taking a screenshot of the step-by-step example so that students can complete the problem on paper. You can either have students attempt the problem on their own prior to your guided instruction or have them complete the problem as you work it together in class.
Meet with a small group of students and complete a Concept Builder workspace together, pausing to explain problem-steps as necessary. In this situation, students will work through the problem-steps together so that questions are answered as they occur.
When working with small groups of students who need additional MATHia support, set a goal of working in a workspace with the students for a short period of time followed by their working independently for a small amount of time. Each time you work with the students, shorten the time you work together and lengthen the time students work on their own. The ultimate goal is to gradually transition students into being able to work independently with minimal assistance from you.
As students work in MATHia, work with a student one-on-one to provide targeted instruction to re-engage students with previous standards or introduce new ones.
Emerging multilingual students are consistently working on two skill sets in the math classroom: mathematical skills and language skills. You can help support their development of language through mathematics by:
Having students turn on Text to Speech on the first day of class. This allows students to feel empowered to self-select when they need help reading and when they don’t. This is a great way to help students build self-advocacy skills.
Teaching students how to use Google Translate.
Have students enable Google Translate in their settings.
Show them how to turn the extension on and off so they can create bilingual text in the workspace.
